The importance of information, the current state of play

Audit Commission : Improving information to support decision making: standards for better quality data, data quality framework Nov 07

To encourage public bodies to improve the quality of the data they use for decision making. Presents a set of clear and concise standards, based on accepted good practice and the key characteristics of good quality data:

  • Accuracy – sufficient for purpose.

  • Validity – compliance in use & recording.

  • Reliability – stable & consistent data collection.

  • Timeliness – available quickly & frequently enough.

  • Relevance – to purpose being used for.

  • Completeness – based on information needs, to reduce risk.
