The importance of information, the current state of play

The Cabinet Office has published the following reports:

Cabinet Office, Working Together - Public Services On Your Side
The paper details the steps the Government is taking to give people, communities and frontline staff the information and real power they need to personalise public services. Reflecting their local and individual needs will create a richer, fairer and safer society.


Cabinet Office, Civil Service Reform working paper,
A brief overview of the importance and nature of Civil Service reform, emphasizing the importance of more accurate information and analysis to provide and evidence base of what works and forward plan.


Ed Mayo and Tom Steinberg,
The Power of Information Task Force.
Sets out the social and economic gains that be achieved from better use of the data that government holds, and how much further the government has to go to capitalise on these. It includes recommendations on:

  • liberalising non-personal government information to unlock the huge innovation potential of the government's information;

  • the cataloguing of public sector information and government licensing terms;

  • freeing up the UK's mapping and address data for use in new services;

  • ensuring that public sector information is made as simple as possible for people to find and use.

Systemic culture and behaviour change is required & help for the public sector acquire the new skills and practices required


Cabinet Office, Transformational Government Review, May 09

The third annual Transformational Government report sets out the progress that has been made during 2008. It stresses that

  • “the management of public information is now a truly integral part of the Transformational Government agenda

In particular…

  • Government is committed to ensuring that civil servants are aware of their responsibilities in managing knowledge and information effectively. This means treating information as an asset.”
