The
importance of information, the current state of play
SAS,
Business Intelligence Maturity & the quest for better performance, March
2007
Describes results from global
cross sector research (17% from the public sector) to assess trends in the use
of Business Information, the impact on performance and key enablers & barriers
to better use of BI.
Their key findings are that
there is a direct correlation between the organizations with greater BI maturity
and their performance. These results are similar to Audit Commission findings in
UK local Government. For example 72% with high information management maturity
/practices exceeded previous years performance against 48% with low maturity
exceeding performance. Also more BI mature and better performing organizations
tend to be larger, global, publicly-traded, and to report higher levels of
competition as a driver forcing change and prioritisation of high information
management.
The key reasons for success
or failure include:
-
Level of Data quality /
integration achieved.
-
Culture. For example the
degree of willingness to change/share/provide wider access to BI, the level
of evidence based decision making.
-
Availability and use of
BI tools For example
for dissemination, analytics.
- Degree
of centralisation of BI tools & skills into Centres of Excellence or BI
Competency Centres
