Welcome to the portal supporting the BCS stand at the EURIM Showcase.

The British Computer Society is the professional body for people working with information systems. It has invited several trade associations to share with it a stand showing a range of data sharing applications likely to be important to parliamentarians. The aims of EURIM, of us collectively and of each individually are shown below.

The organisations sharing the stand are:

Before the day of the Showcase, the members of the team manning the stand will use this website  to learn enough about each others’ material to guide the visitors and answer questions. This could lead to valuable feedback and perhaps some cross-references.

Exhibitors on the shared stand are demonstrating operational services and prototypes. These can be viewed on the computer screens either from local storage or from the internet. Visitors are invited to explore the material using the menu of participants’ “articles” or from the introduction.

Theme.

Information sharing extends beyond the public sector and beyond data about persons. The public sector is both a supplier of data to, and user of data from, the private and voluntary sectors. Users of data are also increasingly becoming suppliers also.

Government is implementing the Lisbon Agenda with respect to the knowledge economy. One action last year was to transpose the European Directive on the Re-use of Public Sector Information into UK law. A few PSI re-users are developing valuable services now by mixing data from public, private, voluntary and user sectors. However, the potential will not be realised by UK businesses without further encouragement of data sharing by the public sector. Foreign competition is a threat to UK suppliers, particularly in global markets, despite the strength of the widely respected UK brand.

EURIM’s aim

On 22nd June, EURIM is organising a "showcase" in the Attlee Suite, Portcullis House, at which members and observers will display successful examples of information sharing across organisational boundaries. The aim is not only to give parliamentarians and policy advisors an opportunity to see what has already been delivered but to involve more MPs in helping publicise that which is already delivering benefit to voters in their own constituencies.

Our shared aim

Our message complements EURIM’s: sharing beyond government addresses the questions in Margaret Moran’s invitation letter about actual achievements, silo mentalities, security, accuracy, protection and delivery; and it brings economic benefits.

Government is a major participant in the knowledge economy, both as provider and as user of information. It is also a regulator, e.g. of access, and a licenser, e.g. of Crown copyright material. The pertinent policies are under continuous review. All of us are looking to be consulted and therefore to be better known by, among others, Parliamentarians and their staff and by officials.

Our individual aims

We are membership organisations which exist both to represent our members’ interests and to serve a wider public. Differences of view are not only inevitable, but desirable. However, we seek an informed debate and wider understanding of the issues, particularly among those who make public policy. We want Parliamentarians to know about our contributions and to consult us.
